What Step-Up Verification Is

Step-up verification is an extra security check that appears right before a sensitive action, even when you are already signed in. It confirms that the person taking the action is really you.

When You Will See It

A step-up prompt can appear before actions such as:

• Managing payouts or financial settings
• Changing roles or permissions
• Company or organization administration

When triggered, a dialog asks for a current 6-digit code from your authenticator app. Enter it and choose to verify. Your original action then continues. The verification stays valid for a short window, so you are not asked repeatedly for back-to-back actions.

Authenticator Codes Only

Step-up verification accepts a code from your authenticator app. Backup codes are not used here, so keep your authenticator available for these actions.

SSO and Enterprise Accounts

Step-up applies to every session, including enterprise single sign-on. If you hold a sensitive role but have not yet set up an authenticator, you are prompted to enroll in two-factor authentication first so the action can be protected. See Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication.
