Open-source PII detection and anonymization for text and images

About

Presidio helps to ensure sensitive data is properly managed and governed, providing fast identification and anonymization modules for private entities in text and images such as credit card numbers, names, locations, social security numbers, bitcoin wallets, US phone numbers and financial data. It ships as Python packages (presidio-analyzer, presidio-anonymizer, presidio-image-redactor and presidio-structured) plus Docker images and a REST API, and combines predefined and custom recognizers built from NER models, regular expressions, rule-based logic and checksums, with pluggable NLP engines including spaCy, Stanza, Transformers, Flair and GLiNER. Trade-offs to weigh: the project itself warns that because it uses automated detection mechanisms, there is no guarantee that Presidio will find all sensitive information, and that additional systems and protections should be employed, so it is not a compliance guarantee. It is also mid-transition from a Microsoft-owned project to community governance under the Data Privacy Stack GitHub organisation, during which repository and documentation URLs may change or redirect; legacy Microsoft Container Registry images remain available for older tags but are no longer updated, and users must repoint mcr.microsoft.com/presidio-* references to ghcr.io/data-privacy-stack/presidio-*. The library surface is Python-centric.
